What to wear for a Dubai portrait session
Almost every question I get before a portrait sitting is about clothes. The honest answer is that wardrobe matters less than fit, and fit matters less than how comfortable you feel wearing it for ninety minutes.
Here is what actually works in front of the camera in Dubai.
Choose colour before you choose garments
Pick two or three tones and stay inside them. Muted, saturated colours photograph better than bright neon, which reflects onto skin and shifts your complexion green or pink. Deep blues, olive, camel, charcoal, ivory and burgundy all hold up in strong sunlight.
Pure white blows out easily in outdoor Dubai light and pure black loses all texture in shadow. Off-white and charcoal give you the same look with detail intact.
Fabric and fit do the real work
Structured fabrics such as wool blends, crisp cotton and heavier linen hold shape on camera. Thin jersey clings and creases within minutes of sitting in a car.
Have anything important tailored. A well-fitted inexpensive jacket photographs better than an expensive one that pulls at the shoulder.
Dressing for the heat
From May to September, outdoor sittings run at sunrise or sunset and you will still be warm. Bring the outer layer separately and put it on for the frames that need it. Natural fibres hide perspiration better than synthetics, and a small towel plus blotting papers in the bag are worth more than any accessory.
- Two to three looks is the right number for a 90-minute sitting.
- One formal, one relaxed, one that feels most like you day to day.
- Steam or iron everything the night before; creases are hard to retouch.
- Bring shoes: full-length frames show them, and they change posture.
Patterns, logos and jewellery
Small repeating patterns can shimmer on camera, and loud logos date an image within a season. Simple textures like ribbing, weave and knit read as richness without competing with your face.
Keep jewellery to a few pieces you actually wear. Portraits should look like a good day in your life, not a costume.
Personal branding and headshot specifics
If the images are for a website, LinkedIn or press, match the wardrobe to your audience rather than to a trend. Founders pitching enterprise clients need a different register from a creative director.
Bring one neutral top for tight headshot crops. It keeps the focus on your expression and gives the set a frame that works anywhere.
Grooming and the last hour
Book haircuts a week ahead, not the day before. Drink water the day before rather than the morning of. If you are having makeup done, ask for a matte base; Dubai humidity and camera flash both amplify shine.
Arrive a few minutes early and give yourself time to sit down. The first frames are always warm-up frames, and that is completely normal.
