How to prepare for a beauty photoshoot
Beauty work is photographed close and lit hard, so everything shows: texture, dryness, a chipped nail, a late night. The good news is that almost all of it is controllable with a week of ordinary preparation.
The week before
Keep your skincare routine exactly as it is. A shoot week is the worst possible time to try a new acid, retinol or facial, because reactions surface two or three days later.
Book facials, waxing, threading and tinting at least five to seven days out so redness has time to settle. Nails should be done in a neutral shade unless the brief specifies a colour, since hands appear in most beauty frames.
The day before
Hydrate properly, avoid salty food and alcohol, and get a full night of sleep. Puffiness around the eyes is the single most common thing I retouch, and it is almost entirely a sleep and sodium issue.
Wash and dry hair unless the artist has asked for it unwashed for hold. Avoid heavy oils and silicone serums, which can read as greasy under studio light.
The morning of the shoot
Arrive with a clean, bare face and moisturised skin. Skip SPF with high titanium dioxide content in the hour before makeup, since it can create a white cast under flash.
Wear a button-up or zip top so you can change without pulling clothing over finished hair and makeup.
- Bring a matte primer and blotting papers for humidity.
- Bring lip balm; close-ups are unforgiving on dry lips.
- Eat before you arrive. Beauty days are long and stationary.
- Remove tight hair ties, watches and rings an hour before; marks take time to fade.
For brands and clinics
Send products, packaging and any before-and-after protocol ahead of the shoot day so we can test how they behave under light. Glossy jars need different lighting from matte tubes, and knowing that in advance saves an hour on set.
If the session includes treatment or before-and-after documentation, we lock one lighting setup and one framing so the comparison stays honest across sessions.
On set
Expect frequent small adjustments and long pauses; that is how beauty is built. Frames are reviewed as we shoot so the makeup artist can refine between takes rather than discovering something in post.
Retouching cleans blemishes and stray hairs, but keeps pores and real texture. Skin that looks like plastic dates immediately, and it does not sell products.
