Behind the scenes: editorial photography in Dubai
An editorial is not a set of nice pictures taken on the same day. It is a sequence with a beginning, a middle and an end, and most of the work that decides whether it holds together happens before anyone picks up a camera.
This is roughly how an editorial photography project runs in Dubai from my side of it.
One week out: concept and references
The story comes first: a mood, a character, a place. From there I build a reference board that fixes colour, light direction and the emotional register, so the stylist, hair and makeup artist and model are all solving the same problem.
The shot list is written as a sequence, not a wish list. Wide establishing frame, mid-range movement, close detail, repeated per look, so the set can be laid out across a spread without gaps.
Scouting and permits
I scout at the exact hour the shoot is planned for. A courtyard that looks perfect at 10am can be entirely in shadow at 4pm. Where a location is public and the shoot is commercial, permits are arranged in advance; private venues need written approval from management.
The call sheet
Everyone receives one document with addresses, parking, call times, look order, contact numbers and the weather forecast. It is unglamorous and it saves more shoot time than any piece of equipment.
- Hair and makeup start two hours before the first frame.
- Look changes are scheduled around the light, not the clock.
- One person owns continuity: jewellery, hem, hair, nails.
Shoot day
We start with the frames that depend on the softest light and work outward as the sun moves. I shoot tethered or review on the back of the camera with the stylist between setups, because a wrinkle caught on set takes seconds and takes an hour in post.
Direction on an editorial is mostly about movement and rhythm: walk, turn, breathe, look away. Static posing reads as a catalogue, and a catalogue is not what an editorial is for.
Selection and grade
Selects are chosen for how they sit next to each other, not only for individual quality. Two beautiful frames that repeat the same gesture become one frame in the final set.
The whole story is graded together so skin tone and colour stay consistent across locations, then delivered layout-ready with captions and crops for print and digital versions.
Where editorial shoots go wrong
Too many looks in one day, no backup for weather, and no clear owner of the concept. Editorial work rewards restraint: fewer looks, shot properly, in light that was chosen rather than accepted.
